As I’m sure most fellow homeschooling moms would agree, every moment is a teaching opportunity! So I took advantage of the multi-colored diving rings that I found yesterday on sale.
Dee loves colors. She names everything by color; her play food, her crayons, her books, her shoes and clothing, every family member’s eyes…color is a new fascination with her. Dee also loves swimming and “diving”. (She can’t propel her body down enough on her own to truly “dive” to the bottom of the pool, but will swim to something submerged on a pool step, which is “diving” to her.)
So I seized this teachable moment.
First Dee took turns placing one ring at a time on the step and swam to retrieve it. By the time I started to video her, she decided to show off and go for all the rings at once. (I noticed a faux pas on my part. She was trying to indicate to me, on the video, that she hadn’t named the green or the yellow ring yet. I corrected her and told her she’d already named the yellow one, but after watching the video I now realize she hadn’t.)
We later reinforced the color name association with the rings by using them as ginormous bracelets. She would name the color of the ring, then I would hand it to her to wear as a “bracelet”. She loved her extra large pool “jewelry”.
