Pirates

Yep, that seems to be the theme around here this week. Beginning with the release of the third installment of Pirates of Caribbean, my children have become pirate obsessed.

Last week we had a character contest, so to speak. The one person who showed the best overall character for the entire week, won the privilege of going with us (Mom and Dad) to see the much anticipated movie on its preview night. (My review…better than the second, but not nearly enough Jack Sparrow! He *makes* the movie, and yet his character didn’t have a chance to shine in this movie. Special effects were AWESOME, and could not be done justice on a small screen…but I’m not sure that it was worth the three hours).

Here is the crazy stuff that I witnessed around my house this week:

Yes, my once beautiful nine-year old daughter seems to have joined the ranks of pirate. Isn’t she scary looking? I need to go hide my valuables! (Oh, yeah…I don’t have any valuables.)

One of my favorite Veggie Tales songs of all time is The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything. So in their honor, and in celebration of the end of the traditional “school year”, I thought I would share a new rendition of The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything. This one is called, The Homeschool Kids Who Can’t Do Anything and was written by Zak G., the son of a friend of mine, when he was 12 or 13.

The Homeschool Kids Who Can’t Do Anything

We are the homeschool kids who can’t do anything
We just stay at home and do our work
And if you ask us to do anything
We’ll just tell you
We can’t do anything.

Well, I can’t pass notes in math class
and I’ve never bought my school lunch
and I’ve never had my homework eaten by the family dog
and I’ve never had a hall pass
and I’ve never owned a locker
and I’ve never had detention after school.

We are the homeschool kids who can’t do anything
We just stay at home and do our work
And if you ask us to do anything
We’ll just tell you
We can’t do anything.

Well, I’ve never been suspended
and I’ve never missed the school bus
and I’ve never got a fat lip from the bully in the hall
and I’ve never seen the school nurse
and I’ve never slapped erasers
and I’ve never had detention after school.

We are the homeschool kids who can’t do anything
We just stay at home and do our work
And if you ask us to do anything
We’ll just tell you
We can’t do anything.

Well, I’ve never changed for P.E.
and I’ve never had a swirlie
and I’ve never had a teacher that I didn’t like at all
and I’ve never had supply lists
and I’ve never answered roll call
and I’ve never had detention after school.

We are the homeschool kids who can’t do anything
We just stay at home and do our work
And if you ask us to do anything
We’ll just tell you
We can’t do anything.

But we’ve often taken field trips
and we go to school in pjs
and we often do our work while sitting on our favorite couch
and we finish school by lunchtime
and we find our books on ebay
and we don’t have any homework after school!

  4. I’m telling ya, our kids are lucky-duckies– done by lunch and NO homework! I remember being up until midnight doing busy…er..homework. And this was after completing all of my assignments IN class that day. What a waste of 4 years worth of evenings! (not b/c I was a high school slacker, I was actually at the top of my class).

    I love that song!
