Field Trip Photos

TECO Manatee Viewing Center

The photo in this entry, I cannot take credit for. It was one I “snagged”…but I did get a few!

This is how close the manatee got to the viewing platform!

Since they are mammals, manatees have to come up for air approximately every four minutes. When they do, all you can see is a big cute nose!

Here are the young'uns at the manatee education center. In the background is a real manatee skeleton. Did you know that they even have fingernails on their flippers like a human?

Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary

Sunflower was reading about the red-tailed hawk. The one at the sanctuary was blind in one eye, so he couldn't hunt in the wild.

There were all kinds of different injuries. Some were minor so the birds could be rehabilitated and returned to the wild, but several of the birds had long-term injuries which would require them to live out their days in the sanctuary.

This poor guy above was missing his top bill.

And I have been accused of sleeping in some strange positions! I think this fella has me beat!

Besides the talking crow named Jeffrey, I think the children liked this the best. A nestful of fuzzy white baby pelicans. I counted three in the nest, while pelicans usually only have one or two eggs, according to the tour guide.

Doesn't he look regal?

My hubby and children outside of the bird sanctuary. We went out on the beach for a picnic lunch after our visit…

…and got attacked by these guys! I took this photo as they were hovering directly over my head on a quest to grab my sandwich. (I won't tell you what they did on Ant's head!)

Okay, so this photo has absolutely nothing to do with our field trips, but he's so cute that I couldn't resist posting. Just imagine he is saying, “Y'all come back now, ya hear?”

  1. Hey, I was finally able to comment! That looks wonderful! I love animals & can’t wait to get back to the zoo soon. An aquarium would be a great trip someday. I hadn’t been able to comment; for some reason it wasn’t working for me until now. Anyway, am praying for Candace & the others. Thanks for visiting me too – I visit you regularly!

  2. I didn’t know I had flippers. I’m going to have to check that one. (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

This looks like so much fun. We really need to go on a field trip. We don’t get anywhere anymore with the gas prices being what they are and all. :-(
